Institute of Folklore Studies
The Institute conducts research, including survey work, on folklore, collecting and storing records and literature on the subject. The core of the Institute's collection is the Yanagita collection, which is comprised of 37,000 volumes donated by Professor Kunio Yanagita, known as the founder of Japanese folklore studies. Joint research meetings, academic lectures, and various photograph, writing, and artifact exhibitions are held here. Research conducted by the institute is recorded in the Journal of the Institute of Japanese Folklore Studies. The Institute houses a collection of about 77,000 volumes, 8,000 of which were donated by the Japan Folklore Society.
