A Message from the Dean
From Seijo’s campus, we may view not only the glittering skyscrapers of metropolitan Tokyo but also natural vistas such as the majestic Mount Fuji, crowned with snow, in the distance. Civilization and nature: because we live within time and space between those two polar opposites, we ponder the nature of life and how we should live it within these parameters.
We at the Graduate School of Literature interrogate such subjects in our disciplines. Our six majors—Japanese language and literature, English, Japanese folk culture, aesthetics and art history, communications, and European culture—cover most of the humanities and in each, we contemplate, investigate, and debate to further our knowledge.
The area around Seijo University has long been loved by writers and artists such as Kunio Yanagita and Hakushu Kitahara, making it a superb environment for those pursuing academic studies. The university’s tradition and its record of achievements as we are about to celebrate our centennial, provides fertile ground for our academic endeavors.
In this day and age when short-term profit is what most people look for, we at the Graduate School of Literature at Seijo University continue to contemplate how we may enrich our lives and also give back to society.

Dean, Graduate School of Literature
